Take water in a vessel. Now take a laboratory thermometer and dip its knob in the water kept in the vessel in such a way that the knob does not touch the wall of the vessel and the thermometer remains vertical. Observe the movement of mercury in the thermometer. When the mercury in the thermometer is stable, take the reading of the thermometer. This will be the temperature of the water kept in that vessel.
