How to make iodoform in the laboratory- preparation of iodoform

Name of the experiment - Preparation of iodoform in the laboratory.  Equipment- Conical Flask (100ml), Beaker (250ml), Funnel, Measurer
Rolling pin .  Chemicals- acetone (3ml), 10% NaOH solution (15 ml), potassium iodide (6 gm), iodine (3 gm).

Principle: Acetone reacts with iodine and NaOH to form a yellow precipitate of iodoform.

CH3COCH3 + 3I2 + 4 NaOH ---> CHI3 + 3Nal + CH3COONa + 3H2O                Iodoform

How to make iodoform in the laboratory.

Process – Take 3 ml acetone and about 100 ml distilled water in a spherical flask, add 7.5 g of potassium iodide, stir it slowly and then add 100 g of 5% sodium hypochloride solution slowly and leave it for 15 minutes. After filtering, the yellow fibrous iodoform is obtained.

Melting point - 120° Centigrade.

 Precautions :
(i) The utensils should be clean. 
(ii) The right amount of chemical substances should be added to the process.
(iii) Work should never be done with bare hands.
