If you're concerned about tracking pixels from email images compromising your privacy and security, here's how to disable automatic image loading in Gmail, Outlook, and Apple Mail.
To stop images from loading automatically in Gmail, click the Settings gear at the top right of the desktop and select View all settings. Under the General tab, select View images and ask before displaying external images to prevent images from being displayed automatically. Scroll down and hit Save Changes.
On mobile, tap on the hamburger menu and select Settings. Select the account you want to manage, then scroll to the bottom and tap the image. Select Ask to block images on mobile before displaying external images.
To see images embedded in emails, tap the Show Images banner, then tap Always Show Images from this sender to permanently whitelist them.
In the Apple Mail app on your Mac, disable automatic image loading under Mail > Preferences > Viewing, then uncheck the box next to Load remote content in Messages. Now when viewing an email from the Mail app, the images will not load and a remote content banner will appear. Click the Load Remote Content button in the banner to view the blocked images.
You can also do this from the mobile app on your iPhone or iPad. Go to Settings > Mail and toggle Load Remote Images to off. When you try to view an email that contains images, a banner will be displayed at the top of the screen. You can tap Load all images to display images from that email.
Microsoft sets Outlook to block images by default. Unblock them by clicking Download images from email banners. If you're using the Outlook desktop app, go to File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Automatic Downloads and check the box that says Automatically in standard HTML e-mail messages or RSS items Do not download images.
On mobile, tap the profile icon in the upper-left corner, then click the Settings gear. From here, select the account you want to edit, then flip the switch to block external images. A banner will then appear above the email containing the embedded images; Tap Download Images to load the images only in that specific email.
By default, Yahoo! Blocks external images. Turn it on by clicking Settings > More settings > View email. Under the Show pictures in messages header, make sure Ask before showing external pictures is checked. You have to turn it on in the mobile app; Tap your profile icon and open Settings, then scroll down to Block images and toggle the feature on.
Marketing emails often contain hidden codes that can track your online activity. This includes pixels inside images that monitor where and when you opened the email.
This helps companies know what's working and which customers are most likely to click open (and buy something). But if you have privacy and security concerns, at least when it comes to images, there's an easy solution: block automatic image loading.
By adjusting a few settings, you can prevent marketers from spying on you and even avoid annoying follow-up emails from senders who know you've read their email. Here in Gmail, Apple's Mail app, and Microsoft Outlook on desktop and mobile

Now, when you open an email with blocked images, a banner will pop up informing you of the images available for display. To view the images embedded in the email, click Display images below in banner. You can also whitelist specific contacts by selecting Always display images from the [Contacts] option, blocking all others.
Apple Mail-
Outlook-
On a Mac, go to Microsoft Outlook > Preferences > Reading > Security and click Never to stop image downloads. Or choose the option to download images automatically, but only from your contacts.
